University
of Limerick Debating Union
O'Mahoney's
Team Debate
The newest debating competition in the University
of Limerick Debating Union. It is also the most open of the competitions
with all current members and life members eligible for entry. This was
originally a Mace format debate, 4 teams per debate and advance notice
of motions, held over 2-3 weeks on a knock out basis. However in 1998 this
was reviewed and changed to a worlds style debate to give it a more intervarsity
feel and allow graduate life members and adjudicators attend. Three debates
in one day with points awarded in each debate for both team position (1st-4th)
and speaking ability (out of 100). Wining team is the one with most points
and the best speaker is the one with highest speaker points NOT in the
winning team.
Interestingly the team competition has been dominated
by the senior experienced members but the best individual has been the
preserve of Freshers. Unlike the Ciaran Treacy there is no bar on past
winners attempting to defend their title.
